Bargain hunters can get out their treasure maps to search Daniel Island neighborhoods for the annual fall Red Balloon Yard Sale on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Those wishing to take advantage of the chance to clear some clutter should put a red balloon at their home to let everyone know you are participating in this island-wide event.

The Daniel Island Property Owners Association reminds sellers the sale must be in either the front or rear of their property and no blocking of sidewalks is allowed. Set up or selling is not allowed in any POA common areas, parks, or amenities or those belonging to the City of Charleston. This is prohibited for liability and insurance reasons.

The sale will be held rain or shine. There is no rescheduled date for inclement weather.

Many homeowners have already registered their sale location and can be found on the map on the POA website.

If you would like for your address to be added to the sale map, email info@dicommunity.org. Please include in the subject line of the email “2024 Fall Red Balloon Yard Sale Map” and then in the body of the email provide your Daniel Island address as well as a good contact phone number in case the POA needs to get back to you for any reason. The address will then be added to the map of participating homes.

This is only for homes located on Daniel Island.

For those participating in the yard sale who would like to donate unsold items to Palmetto Goodwill, they will have one truck located at the Blackbaud parking lot on Fairchild Street and River Landing Drive to collect donated items from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or until their truck fills up). Goodwill may not be able to accommodate everyone due to truck space and timing constraints and depending on the number of donations but will try to accommodate to the best of their ability. Donation collection is on a first-come, first-serve, drop-off basis.

Area residents assess storm damage

How did Tropical Storm Debby affect Daniel Island?

Although most of Daniel Island and parts of Cainhoy were relatively unscathed from Tropical Storm Debby last week, there are still some areas in Berkeley County under water with homeowners continuing to clean up the damage.

Heavy and widespread rainfall from Debby impacted the Charleston metro area, with officials confirming six tornadoes along a few of the barrier islands and other locales inland.

Shea Gibson, a Daniel Island meteorologist and wind forecaster for WeatherFlow-Tempest, said the “highest (non-tornadic) wind speed recorded was 63 mph in a gust at south Folly Beach,” and added that “stronger impacts with winds and surge occurred to our northeast, up along the Grand Strand, and into southeast North Carolina.

“But now, we also have inland river basins such as the upper Ashley and Edisto rivers flooding over as heavy rainfalls overburdened the natural watershed. So we are still dealing with impacts from Debby, even though it is long gone.”

Storm Effects on DI and Cainhoy

According to Chris Hamil, operations manager for the Daniel Island Property Owners’ Association, “Daniel Island is fortunate to have such forethought go into the stormwater drainage ponds. As stewards of these ponds, the DIPOA team takes great efforts in maintaining and inspecting them often.”

Most of the calls that Hamil fielded had to do with the reopening of neighborhood pools, which were closed the majority of last week for safety reasons. The closure allowed both the pool contractor and the POA field operations team time to ensure the areas were debris-free and the pools were up to the standards set by the South Carolina Department of Health.

Other calls reported downed trees and limbs in a few areas, which Hamil shared with the POA to alert arborists to address.

Hamil said the main issue was flooding on Daniel Island Drive from Fairchild Street to the newly renovated Beresford Creek Bridge, which affected some car traffic. Leaf debris was evenly distributed throughout the island, he said, but nothing too major.

Hamil encouraged residents to email or call for any issues or concerns regarding POA-maintained property, like boat landings, pools, trails, common areas, ponds, and parks – other than Governors, Freedom, Fallen Oak, or Etiwan parks, which are under the control of the City of Charleston. Hamil said to include the address or location of the issue, and if possible, a photo of the problem. The POA can be reached at info@dicommunity.org or by calling Hamil directly at 843-696-4676.

As far as rain totals for the area, Gibson said Daniel Island received 13-14 inches of rainfall by the morning of Thursday, Aug. 8, and then added 3-4 inches more the next day.

“The drain runoff and infrastructure handled the rainfall totals very well,” he said, “except for those few ‘known’ areas that tend to flood. Fortunately, tidal flooding and surge were not issues this time around.”

Berkeley County damage

Berkeley County officials continue to assess storm damage throughout the county. Crews are surveying the damage and going door-to-door to gauge the extent of the storm’s impact.

Residents and businesses that sustained structural storm damage are encouraged to report it on the county’s citizen damage report website at bit.ly/4dA2kaN. The reports will aid in determining the appropriate federal and state funding for damage caused by Debby.

Reports and detailed messages can also be made on the Citizen Call Line at 843-719-4800. The Citizen Call Line is for non-emergency calls only, and callers will hear an automated response.

The storm also affected the 2024-25 school year as the Berkeley County School District pushed back the official first day to Thursday, Aug. 15, to give the teachers more time to prepare.

Hurricane season on upswing

Daniel Island and Cainhoy residents are reminded that the best way to prepare for upcoming storms is to update hurricane kits and to have an evacuation plan ready. Residents are also encouraged to use trusted sources for information only and to check the National Hurricane Center and National Weather Service often for official information.

“We are just now getting into the upswing of the hurricane season, and we will see more activity as we approach the middle and end of August,” Gibson said. “Even though the peak of the Atlantic basin hurricane season is September 10 by historic reference, we have seen hurricanes along our coast well into October,” adding that, “once our coastal shelf waters cool in mid-late October and November, we (will) see systems really struggle to maintain strength if heading our way.”

Local agencies are conducting damage assessments across the Lowcountry following Tropical Storm Debby’s impact last week.

The City of Charleston, Berkeley County, the Daniel Island Property Owner’s Association, and other South Carolina agencies issued updates on the storm and what to do now that cleanup has begun.

Here’s the latest advice:

DIPOA/City of Charleston

The DIPOA reports that the island received around 13 inches of rain, and the infrastructure held up well.

Residents are advised to contact the City of Charleston Citizens Services Desk to report damage and create a work order online for their departments to follow up on. Complete the form online. If you do not have web access or prefer to report by telephone, please call them at 843-724-7311. Reports can include but are not limited to down city street trees, damages on their property, clogged drains, etc.

Garbage collection as well as yard debris collection resumed today, Monday, Aug. 12. For trash collection schedules, use the TrashTracker Mobile App to get the most up-to-date information.

Berkeley County

Berkeley County continues to assess storm damage throughout the county. Crews will be out surveying damage and going door-to-door to gauge the extent of the storm's impact.

Residents and businesses that sustained structural storm damage are encouraged to report it on the county’s website. These reports will determine appropriate federal and state funding for damage caused by the storm.

Reports can also be made on the Citizen Call Line at 843-719-4800. Leave a detailed message. The Citizen Call Line is for non-emergency calls only, and callers will hear an automated response.

Many areas around the county remain flooded and several roadways still closed as of latest reports on Sunday. Do not drive around or move barricades. Find an updated list of road closures in the county online.

The landfill and most convenience centers are open for disposal. Check the current list of any closed centers online.

South Carolina Department of Environmental Services

Following Tropical Storm Debby’s landfall in South Carolina, the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) is working with state and local partners to assess damages and impacts across the state. Here are sources of information about follow ups.

Dam Safety Assessments

SCDES’s Dam Safety team is performing post-storm assessments of hundreds of high- and significant-hazard dams around the state. These post-storm assessments allow staff to observe whether any dam owners need to take immediate actions to help retain the structural integrity of their dams. Coastal Storm Impacts

SCDES’s Bureau of Coastal Management team is conducting assessments of damages to beachfront structures within the state's jurisdiction. Coastal residents are encouraged to report damage to beachfront structures, including homes, pools, seawalls, revetments, and dune walkovers, at mycoast.org/sc.

Daniel Island goes back-to-back, wins 2024 City Swim Meet

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The Daniel Island Flying Fish swim team won the 2024 City Swim Meet on Sunday.

The Coastal Carolina Aquatic Association (CCAA) annual swim meet saw over 800 swimmers from 17 different Lowcountry teams face-off at the North Charleston Aquatic Center on Sunday.

Last year, Daniel Island ended an eight-year streak of titles from Snee Farm in thrilling fashion. They won their first title in 2023 edging Snee Farm by 14 points.

This year, the Daniel Island Flying Fish were dominant, winning by 387 points.

The Northbridge Terrace Killer Whales came in second place with 2,725 points and Snee Farm came in third place with 2526.5 points.

According to the CCAA, three swimmers captured triple crowns in this year’s City Meet by winning three events. Those are Northbridge Terrace’s Saylor Hood (9-10 girls butterfly, backstroke, and individual medley), Crowfield’s Joshua Bornfleth (11-12 boys freestyle, backstroke, and individual medley), and Sha-Mel-Lon’s Carley Foust (13-14 girls freestyle, butterfly, and individual medley).

Snee Farm’s Avery Frece was the only swimmer to set meet records in two events: the 15-18 girls freestyle and butterfly.

Multiple new City Meet records were also set on Sunday: Northbridge Terrace’s Harbor Hood (7-8 girls breaststroke), Hobcaw’s Leah Carrico (9-10 girls breaststroke), Crowfield’s Brody Haefner (9-10 boys breaststroke), James Island’s Holden Jickling (9-10 boys backstroke), Daniel Island’s Ellie Chalupsky (15-18 girls backstroke), Hobcaw’s Adair Shaw (15-18 girls individual medley), and Longpoint’s Stephen Russell (15-18 boys backstroke). Chalupsky and Russell actually broke CCAA records twice: first as backstroke leadoff swimmers in the medley relay and then again in their individual events. The 11-12 girls free relay team from the Summerville Y (Gabrielle Burns, Jayla Muldrow, Luna Armijo-Lagares, and Mia Stephen) also established a City Meet record.
